Community Activists Band Together to Keep Watch on Local Media

Portland, Oregon (November 29, 2010) – Media activist Ron Morgan announced today the creation of PDX FREEMEDIA, an awareness group focused on raising awareness of the corporate control of Portland’s mass media environment. PDX FREEMEDIA will give the residents of Portland the knowledge and several fun, specialized, webtools to get a closer look at the giant corporations that dominate the local media scene.

“My team and I are thrilled by this opportunity to give Portlanders the chance to see behind the curtain of our local media machine,” Said Ron Morgan, Executive Director of PDX FREEMEDIA. “The people of Portland take pride in their support of local businesses. That extends to what they listen to on the radio and what they read in their newspapers. The media industry marketers know this too, and they’ve cloaked many of their big-budget outlets in a veil of “local-ness” that is just plain false. “

PDX FREEMEDIA will leverage the latest web-based technology and mobile apps to give the people of Portland a “toolkit” to analyze their own media consumption. From their blog at PDXFREEMEDIA.blogspot.org, activists will spread the truth behind Portland’s “local” media via Twitter feed, Facebook updates, blogs and podcasts.

PDX FREEMEDIA will also branch out into mobile activism through a development contract with The Toy Lounge, an iPhone/Droid app design house specializing in original apps for non-profit organizations.

PDX FREEMEDIA is a local group of media activists focused on returning control of Portland’s media scene to the individual citizen. By empowering each citizen to filter out the messages of big media corporations in favor of local options, PDX FREEMEDIA hopes to improve the diversity of information, entertainment and culture within the greater PDX Metroplex.
